DAY

“This looks like the perfect place to get murdered.” I joke as we arrive at the place where the letter tells us to meet them. I look over at June and notice her unnaturally pale face. “Hey,” I say softly, gently resting my hand on her right shoulder.
She looks at me and quickly blurts out, “What if this situation is a trap?” I lift my eyebrow at her outburst and listen to her as she continues to ramble on. “What if they suspected a couple of houses that we were hiding out in, and to figure out which one it was, they sent the letter and waited for us to turn ourselves in?!” She says, clutching her head.

“Hey—” I begin again, but she cuts me off.
“That explains why the paper was so high quality! The only people who usually buy these kinds of papers are those who can quite literally swim in their bank account. And one of the few individuals who can afford that level of wealth is a commander. She pauses momentarily, her expression filled with fear. “OH MY GOD DAY!” She whisper-screams, causing me to raise my eyebrow even more. “What if I dragged us into danger again?” She speaks with a hint of self-loathing, which makes my heart sink.

“Hey,” I say, pulling her in my arms. “Don’t say that. You didn’t do anything. It was my choice to come here too, and you can’t change the fact that we both agreed to come here. ” I say in a hushed voice, still on high alert to any movement around us. “And don’t talk about yourself like that. ” I add.

“Like what?” She says these words while pulling away slightly to look up at me.
“You know exactly what,” I say, holding eye contact. There is a snap of a tree branch, and I look around instantly, aware of all of my surroundings.

I see a movement in the trees behind us and whirl around, pulling June behind me. I hold my knife at the ready and wait an agonizing couple of minutes. “Who’s there!” I finally called out. There was another gap of silence, then two figures followed by a small group of people walked out. I take a step back with June and narrow my eyes to make out the faces of the first two people. My eyes widen as I realize who they are. It’s Tess and Kaede.
