1. The Egg

A butterfly lays eggs on the bottom of the living leaf. The egg can be round or oval. It can be smooth, bumpy, or wrinkled.

2. The Larva (Caterpillar)

The eggs hatch and the little one called larvae or caterpillar comes out of the egg. The caterpillar, first feeds on its egg that it came out of. Then the larvae start eating on a leaf. It begins to grow very fast. The larvae sheds its skin several times so it can keep growing. It can grow 100 times of itself in this stage. The larvae can have a really cool pattern. It looks like a worm.

3. Pupa (Chrysalis)

Once the larva is big enough it stops eating. Then it spins a cocoon around itself. It mostly spins a cocoon around itself on a twig. It is no longer a larva instead, it becomes a Pupa or a Chrysalis. It stays really still for another few weeks. All those transforming is called ‘metamorphosis,’.
